The Lost Key
Woe to you lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge. You did not enter in yourselves, and those who were entering in you hindered.
Luke 11:52
Keys have a way of getting lost. But we see in this verse that the key of knowledge was deliberately taken away by the very people who were to free the captives of sin.
The lawyers were supposed to be skilled in God's Law. They should have been expounding its precepts, showing the true nature of sin and the righteousness of God. This is what Jesus did in the Sermon on the Mount. He expanded and elevated the Law by showing that God considered lust to be adultery (Matthew 5:27-28). He also showed anger and hatred to be a transgression of the sixth commandment. The moral Law shows us how far we fall short of the glory of God. It shows us that we are sinners in desperate need of the Savior.
The lawyers weren't faithful to God or His Word. They bent the key out of shape, rendering it useless, and so left themselves and their hearers locked in the prison of sin to their own just damnation.
Ask yourself:
Do I ever twist, add, or take away from Scripture to say something or do something that it doesn't because I want to justify myself?
Do I not really listen and receive to what the Truth really is?
Do I hinder others from going in and receiving the key of knowledge because I won't enter myself?
Therefore bothers and sisters, remember that we are to sharpen each other and to edify one another bringing unity in Spirit and Truth. Hold nothing back, nor limit, nor hinder; yourself or others from receiving the key of knowledge. Hear and understand the Word of God, walk with others helping them to apply it to their lives as they do with you. Be a doer of the Word and not just a hearer. Do not become one of the lawyers that Jesus was talking about.
