Calvary
What does "calvary" mean biblically and spiritually?What were you taught about the "calvary" of the cross? How do you define "calvary" when referring to it?
Today, we will learn about what calvary means biblically. Trust me, we're not going to be talking about men on horses, lol. Nor, will we be talking about some buddies or a cohort of soldiers, lol. We will be going a little deeper than just a definition. As well as, you doing your own study on the matter. Lets jump right in.
Calvary means either a type of monumental public Christian cross or some type of shrine. It can also mean an open air representation of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.It also means an experience of usually intense mental suffering. Thats the first 3 definitions that popped up when I just randomly typed calvary. It does say "not" to confuse calvary with cavalry. Cavalry means to send in the army on horseback when on the battlefield.
In definition to the Bible, calvary means Golgotha, which in Aramaic "skull". In Latin Calva means bald head or skull; skull shaped hill in ancient Jerusalem, the site of Jesus' crucifixion. It is referred to in all 4 Gospels. (Matthew 27:33, Mark 15:22, Luke 23:33, and John 19:17)
Why do we call it calvary? It was first used in our language over a thousand years ago, as the name of the place outside ancient Jerusalem where Jesus was crucified. This name comes to English from the Latin word for skull.
Why is calvary important? It was the place where God's Amazing Grace was shown to all who will accept by faith, the finished work of the Lord Jesus Christ. (Ephesians 2:8-9) Grace is not based on family, nationality or race - ha we are of one race the human race, it's not based on who you know or don't know, your deeds, what you have done or do not have. His grace is extended and intended to all!
What is the power of calvary? Its victory and authority over satan. It's the power to become sons of God. We find victory over persecution, victory over intense mental suffering.

I ask that you pray and ask God to reveal to you just how important calvary is. Receive and allow it to impact you to share it with the next person.
